Your attitude towards ghosts (and theirs toward you) reminds me of Hilary Mantel's fantastic novel BEYOND BLACK, which you should definitely read if you haven't.
FWIW, and this isn't quite the same, but growing up *very* Catholic in 70s-80s Boston, I understood The Exorcist to be more or less a documentary that I wasn't old enough to see. An opinion no one in my circled worked too hard to disabuse me of.
“Friends” who dismiss all metaphysical discussion and descriptions of uncanny personal experiences with a sniff of arrogance are not very good friends, possibly. And they might (possibly) be philosophically emaciated, as well. Um, at least if they huff and puff the FIRST time such things are shared. If a certain dearie hears the details of an ectoplasmic encounter six, seven, or ten times … they may have reason to wrinkle nostrils. But you ain’t like that, CW.
You’re an intense thinker. You possess an intellect that is on different wavelengths (yes, plural) from 95% of the population. If that were not true, you would unable to peer beyond the murky cultural and sociological veils that you ultimately dissolve into ether with hilarious—if sometimes harrowing—precision via your written words.
Given the fact that you can perceive and then elucidate things that most people are not even remotely equipped to grasp or detect in tangible society, what’s the big surprise that your brain/body/being is able to ascertain other realities on the sensory-spectrum that remain hidden to others, for whatever reason?
“There are more things in heaven and on earth, Horatio …”
It IS a funny thing, trying to tell smart people about ghost experiences. I think your credibility does take a hit, no matter how much you say, “I’m serious!” etc. I haven’t experienced a ghost sighting or lap-sit myself but friends have. I believe them and I believe you. Paranormal stuff fascinates me. I have a friend whom stuff happens to. She has video of a drawer opening on its own and a shadow passing over the room.
I have seen and heard things about which I maintain a healthy skepticism… which is to say, I recognize that there are perfectly rational explanations for those phenomena that do not involve the paranormal, but I will not say with conviction that those are THE explanations for what happened.
But that’s not what I’m saying…. sorry I was unclear. My skepticism is aimed at both the rational AND the paranormal explanations for what happened to me; all I can say with certainty is that weird visual and auditory shit has happened to me that could have been ghosts, could have been something else not of this world, could have been dreams or coincidences. I’ll never know, and I’ve gotten better at living in that uncertainty.
Cintra, I will always fight black entities and random ghosts for you. Some are called. Fuck the disbelievers!
You have always emerged triumphant!!

“Ghosts are just people without bodies and can’t do anything to you.” Right. Anyone reassured by this has no internal life.
Yeah, it was a bit like kissing my sister. I was hoping he'd equip me with wooden stakes and Holy Water and various forms of Ghostbusters tubing.

Yeah, you're part of the problem. Just because you haven't seen them doesn't mean they're not there.

That's a nice way of putting it.
