Also enjoyed the Thomas Hobbes paraphrase, repurposed for jazz porno. Solitary and poor are frequently omitted but sadly accurate these days; nasty, brutish and short have always numbered among my virtues.
1.) ‘Last Plane Out’ featured in a lot of my mix CDs well into the current century. 2.) Toy Matinee was a great band. 3.) The lyrics of LPO were worthy of Warren Zevon. 4.) Sometimes, a saxophone is not a cigar.
maybe i should update the substack app because i'm sure not seeing any evidence of jack's theme song plus it bunches my "notes'' section all up on the left side like discarded panties found on disco dance floor ....Fez sounded like a cool place as for jazz and sex theres a reason that dude slips cruise that miles davis cassette in jerry maguire
Stubblefield was a friend and colleague of mine; nice to see him remembered in all his outrageous glory. BTW your music critic chops are a helluva lot more interesting than the usual lot. "African brass is about my favorite sound on earth. I love the Mingus horn arrangements. Towering, angular and sweet. Sweeping across savannas and into traffic. Unexpected yet rooted in the past. Elegant and dirty at the same time."
Laughed right out loud to: "John Stubblefield and I were doing something, and it was consensual."
Mingus III (Charles' son) was my next-door neighbor and told some tales about how his father and co. definitely knew what they were doing. Thanks for sharing! Great theme song, Mr. Black!
Fresh. Wild. Bet you didn't edit it. Incredible writing. So glad you're around. You're one of my favorite pieces of art. Thank you.
Thank you for making it worthwhile.

Mingus was a very unique musician and person.
“The solo got wilder and louder and more crazily ornate and I fanned myself with the program.” [Southern belle voice]: Oh my!

Amazing that you knew him! Hope it was a fitting tribute!
Oh yes, fitting indeed, he would love it!
The kind of stuff I live for: both the event and the colorful recounting of it!
That was glorious. Dirty magic carpet is the name of my new band, and I’m gonna nickname the members Punches, Chokeholds, and Flightsofducks.

When I first moved to NYC in the summer of 2000, Fez was one of my favorite cocktail spots. That and Pravda, another basement bar a few blocks uptown…
