Loved this read. You are my favourite writer on the internet..."It is my firm belief that you don’t have to be happy, but you have to seem to be cheerful for the sake of other people. We’re all in the same lifeboat. Morale is everyone’s problem." TRUTH.
Dogs & death: my mom's brain died roughly a week before her body did, and I'm pretty sure I witnessed her last moment of neurological function thanks to her dog. He was walking past her, suddenly flinched violently, and turned to look at her with an expression that could only have been grief... Now *I* need a glass of wine. I will actually be in Manhattan for the next few days but won't get to Brooklyn this trip. Happy Halloween! xo
Yes, dogs may be able to detect schizophrenia or at least some biochemical changes associated with it. Dogs have an extraordinary sense of smell and can detect subtle changes in body odor linked to physiological and psychological conditions, including stress, anxiety, and certain neurological changes.
People with schizophrenia often experience hormonal and chemical changes that may alter their body scent. While there is limited direct research on dogs specifically identifying schizophrenia, there’s promising evidence that dogs can detect conditions with subtle, scent-related changes, such as seizures in epilepsy and low blood sugar in diabetes. Some studies even suggest that dogs can detect chemical signals linked to mental health disorders, which may extend to schizophrenia, though more research is needed to confirm this ability.
Specially trained psychiatric service dogs also help people with schizophrenia by interrupting harmful behaviors or providing comfort during episodes.
I admire people who keep a positive attitude. I can't sustain it. Part of me enjoys being cantankerous and irritating others. It's a gift so I'm compelled to use it.
Why limit yourself to only wearing a ski mask to work when you HAVE to? For instance, a menacing Pilgrim lady wielding a spoon ominously in a ski mask would be truly terrifying. Just a thought.
Never lived in Brooklyn, did my time in the Village (not east, not west, Greenwich Goddamn Village) on Thompson @ Houston. It was the 80s so I had a blast and finally had to leave because I know I'd kill myself if I didn't. I mean who needs sleep and regular meals when the clubs are open all night and there's cocaine (though of a lesser quality than I'd get at home in SF)?
I now feel absolutely inadequate (or perhaps I'm a spy) because I have no stickers on either of my laptops, nor on my iPad. Perhaps I'll have to start laptopping in public in my oh, so fashionable hunter's cap with the lovely orange lettering on the front...
I feel a unity in the words you are painting with, Cintra. I was cleaning out files from the turn of the centyr the other day and ran across one of Congressman Bill Richardson and a tiny me in the Pyongyang, DPRK subway hall in 1995. Under the massive portraits of Dear Leader Kim Il Song and his Heroic Cadre marching up the blanks wall behind us..
Yes, terrifying pilgrim! Petrifying Puriran costumes aren’t just for Thanksgiving anymore. I shall dress the same in Birmingham in sororal solidarity. #MilesStandishCanBiteMyButt

Where is this wine bar? I want to visit one of my favorite writers!

I’m sad now to admit that as a gen xer, I too have put a number of stickers on my work tablet and I will never let you see them. 😬
Lived in BK for 25 years, moved to CT for the past 4, and I long to come home. Your post was a nice hint.
Enjoyed this, thank you 🙏
